Finding Non-Partisan Solutions
Lieutenant Governor, 1997
- Governor Dean described Doug’s first term as Lieutenant Gov. as follows: “His hard work and belief in working together to solve common problems led to the most productive, bi-partisan session in my tenure as Governor.”
State Senator, 1991
- Despite a 15-15 split between Republicans and Democrats in the Senate, Doug is unanimously re-elected to his post as Senate President Pro Tempore.
State Senator, 1990
- Endorsing him in the 1990 campaign, the Burlington Free Press described Doug’s first term as Senate President: “He has lowered the decibel level of disagreement between parties and between chambers of the Legislature. He has fought to improve funding for children’s services — day care, treatment of victims of sexual abuse and intensive services for dysfunctional families. Although he is one of the Senate’s champions of environmental protection, Racine has shown a willingness to rethink. He was one of those who hammered out changes in Act 200, the planning law, earlier this year.” BFP, 10/25/1990.

Chuck Egner, Norwich
“I like the fact that Doug is a business man. I think we should run state government more like a business, and Doug would bring that attitude to Montpelier again.”
