Advocating for Children
Involved in public service for over 3 decades, Doug Racine has served as State Senator and Lieutenant Governor. Have a look at some of what Doug has accomplished in advocating for Vermont’s children:
Current Co-Chair, Vermont Child Poverty Council
Former Board Member, Voices for Vermont’s Children
Founding Board Member, Childcare Resource and Referral Center
School Board Member, Mt. Mansfield Union (2005-2008)
State Senator, 2006 – present
- Under Doug’s leadership, the Child Poverty Council published a report in April 2009 titled “Improving the Odds for Kids“
- On April 6, 2009, Doug presented at the Governor’s Summit on Pathways to Economic Stability (with Ann Pugh, Poverty Council co-chair) about the work of the Child Poverty Council.
- 2008 – Doug won the David W. Curtis Leadership Award for his work on childhood poverty issues.
Lieutenant Governor, 2001-2002
- Following the recommendation of Doug and other Democratic senators, Governor Dean forms the Children’s Cabinet to focus attention and resources on problems facing Vermont’s children.
Lieutenant Governor, 1999-2000
- Appointed as Governor’s representative to the Steering Committee of the Education Commission of the States.
- Organized and led conferences on early childhood education and on the impacts of poverty on children and helping them succeed in school.
State Senator, 1989
- Passed legislation providing prenatal care to women and health care for low income children.
State Senator, 1986
- As a member of the Appropriations Committee, Doug fought hard in the face of drastic federal budget cuts to preserve adequate funding for children’s programs, including child care, special education, and child abuse prevention.
