- Voted to legalize same-sex marriage, and voted to override Jim Douglas’ veto of that bill.
- Co-sponsored a 2007 bill to legalize same-sex marriage
Lieutenant Governor, 2001-2002
- As Acting-Governor, in Governor Dean’s absence, signed into law Vermont’s historic Equal Pay for Equal Work law after supporting the bill in the Senate.
Lieutenant Governor, 1999-2000
- Along with the Speaker of the House Michael Obuchowsky, Racine becomes first statewide politician to openly support same sex marriage, while others remained silent in the face of political risk. Read the Burlington Free Press editorial here, slamming Doug for his principled stand.
State Senator, 1992
- Supported passage of Vermont’s first bill outlawing discrimination against homosexuals.
- Supported passage of a Family Leave Bill requiring businesses of 10 or more employees to provide 12 weeks of unpaid leave to workers for the birth or adoption of a child or for family illness
