August 19, 2010Zuckerman said his endorsement of Racine goes far beyond policy: The candidate has taken progressive stances on environment, labor and human rights issues as well. He said Racine as shown “actual true leadership” on positions even when it was unpopular to do so.
That includes Racine’s early support for marriage equality, Zuckerman added. Long before the term civil unions entered the Vermont vernacular, Racine, then the lieutenant governor of the state, came out in support of same-sex marriage after the 1999 court decision.
“Leadership is when you stand up for an issue even when everyone else is not on board yet,” Zuckerman said. “Doug has done that.”
