Racine told committee members he is a native Vermonter, raised in Burlington, and a small business owner. He said his experience in government, as lieutnant governor and Chittenden County state senator, as well as his experience as owner of a family automobile dealership, have prepared him to be governor. “I’m ready for the job, and I’m excited about the job,” he said. “I feel like I have a lot to offer the state, and the state is ready to move forward.”

VTDigger: On video: 7 gubernatorial candidates deliver spiels to business leaders

Chris Graff, former veteran bureau chief and reporter for the Associated Press, posed questions to the candidates that were submitted by members of the Chamber.

Each candidate had 10 minutes to answer the questions, which ranged from “What unique characteristics would you bring to the role of governor?” to “Is Vermont anti-business” to “What is your favorite candy bar?”

Times Argus: Vermont health care bill becomes law, without Gov. Douglas signature

Sen. Doug Racine, who championed the bill in the Senate and is running to replace Douglas, said he was happy the measure will now become law.

But he disagrees with Douglas about the governor’s assertion that the drug sample disclosure section will limit doctors’ willingness to give out free samples.

“None of the data reported will be identified by individual physician,” Racine said. “The Medical Society did not oppose that provision. The pharmaceutical industry opposed that provision.”

“Seriousness of purpose,” responded Democrat Doug Racine of Richmond, a state senator and former lieutenant governor, who said he voted against the state budget bill this year because it leaves an $8 million gap still to be filled. “We can’t play ‘let’s pretend,’” Racine said.
